The iPhone Dev team releases a software utility called redsn0w for Mac and PC which you can use to jailbreak your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Once you download, and run redsn0w it will optionally install Cydia on your device along with the jailbreak so you can install 3rd party apps. If you want to unlock your iPhone and use a non-supported carrier using redsn0w you will have to use the Extras feature and build a custom ipsw file. There are also others apps including ultrasn0w for unlocking your device. As of now the latest supported jailbreak using redsn0w is iOS 5.0.1 for all devices running the A4 chip. Jailbreaks for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 with the A5 chip using redsn0w are coming soon.

What is tethered vs. untethered? Generally, an untethered jailbreak is the better option. A tethered jailbreak is less desirable, and should only be used if absolutely necessary. With a tethered jailbreak you will need to connect your device to your computer using the sync cable if you ever need to restart it or if the battery dies. Then while rebooting you will choose “just boot tethered” from the options.

  7. Choose “Just boot” and put your device into DFU mode once again and wait for a reboot. After this step your Cydia icon will be working.
  8. To get a “semi-tethered” device do the following in Cydia
    1. Go to the Manage tab > Sources > Edit > Add > type in this URL: http://www.thebigboss.org/semitether > Hit Add
    2. Now go back to the source you just added, find the “semitether” application and hit Install.

iPhone Dev-team has just pushed the RedSn0w 0.9.6RC15, the untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.3 firmware. You can download RedSn0w 0.9.6RC15 for Windows and Mac from the links below. RedSn0w 0.9.6RC15 incorporates i0nic’s exploit to provide untethered iOS 4.3.3 jailbreak.

NOTES

  1. ultrasn0w unlockers must stay away from redsn0w! Use only a custom IPSW to update to 4.3.3, to avoid updating your baseband.
  2. ultrasn0w has been updated to v1.2.3 to be compatible with iOS 4.3.3 and earlier (the ultrasn0w update does not include any new baseband support!). Please reboot your iPhone using the normal “slide to power off” swipe after installing ultrasn0w 1.2.3.
  3. By popular demand, redsn0w now allows you to enable multitasking gestures (although most will find it useful only on iPads).
  4. iPad2 update: The iPad 2 jailbreak remains under development. As you may know, the original exploit @comex developed in the first week of the iPad2 release was mysteriously fixed by Apple within days of its development. Partly because of this, don’t expect much public discussion of the iPad2 jailbreak until it’s actually finished and ready for release (and please avoid asking about it). In all liklihood, it will be a userland exploit like the first (unreleased) one, not dependent on bootrom dumps. The first one can’t be released even for those with the original 4.3 firmware due to legal (distribution) reasons.
Redsn0w

… three in a row! Apple released iOS 4.3.3 on Wednesday, and once again the untethered jailbreak exploit that @i0n1c created for 4.3.1 still works. That makes it an unprecedented three firmwares where the same userland exploit works. We’re not exactly sure why Apple hasn’t fixed the hole yet, but we’re not complaining!

oday’s PwnageTool and redsn0w incorporate @i0n1c’s port to 4.3.3 (it’s ironic that such a long-lasting untether doesn’t even have an official name!). It also of course uses geohot’s limera1n bootrom exploit to inject the jailbreak. The 4.3.3 untether works on all devices that actually support 4.3.3 except for the iPad2.
